Queenie and Quintus are quartermasters. Queenie quarrels with the job title. She questions how it could be updated. Teachers have found a way around the old titles of Headmaster and Headmistress. They are simply heads. Quartermistress has never been considered and quarter has a different meaning. A quarter is a fourth part. Quarters are somewhere to stay. Querulously Queenie puts up with her title and gets on with the work of keeping an army supplied with everything it needs – food, equipment and everything else pass through the quartermasters’ stores. Quintus quakes each time they have to move to a new location.

  1. It’s interesting that the quartermaster in the Army and the one in the Navy do two completely different things. In the Army, a quartermaster is a storekeeper, while in the Navy it’s a navigator.
