W is for Word

This April on Sue’s Trifles the theme is the names of God.  There may be more than one name for some of the letters.  There may be others I have omitted.  I hope that by going through the alphabet together we may learn more about the nature of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Letter W

Word is a name of Jesus.  The opening of John’s gospel describes how the Word existed from the beginning.  John 1:1-18

The Bible is also often referred to as the Word of God.  Within it prophets declare the Word of the Lord.

Water of Life is something Jesus claimed to be able to give. John 4:4-4:26 The phrase used in the New International Version is living water, rather than water of life, but the idea is the same.

Wonderful Counsellor (Isaiah 9:6) used to be translated wonderful, counsellor and was set to music in that form by Handel in the Messiah.  Modern translators prefer to leave out the comma and refer to the Holy Spirit.

Worthy is a characteristic of God.  He alone deserves worship, which I have explained elsewhere is a contraction of worth-ship.  In the book of Revelation 4:11 and 5:12 God and the Lamb are described as Worthy.

It might be worth mentioning here that we are not worthy of receiving the living water, but it is a gift from God.

(For names in this post beginning with earlier letters, I hope the A to Z contents is up-to-date.)
