This April on Sue’s Trifles the theme is the names of God. There may be more than one name for some of the letters. There may be others I have omitted. I hope that by going through the alphabet together we may learn more about the nature of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Adonai is a Hebrew word found in the Old Testament. Its English equivalent is Lord.
Almighty God is a phrase often used in prayers. The Book of Common Prayer has collects (prayers) for Sundays, Saints days and other occasions. Many of these address God in his way. There is a song about “our God”, sung mostly by children, with the line “There is nothing that He cannot do”. That sums up Almighty. Many people find it hard to understand how there can be so much injustice in the world if there really is a God, who is almighty. There are no easy answers. Studying the Bible (and other books) helps to find a perspective, which leads to understanding. Everyone has to live their own life and make their own peace with God.
Advocate is a word, which is used in the context of courts of law. It is someone, who speaks for another, pleading a case. The Holy Spirit is described as an Advocate.
