L is for…

A lute and a lyre both have strings.  A lyre is like a small harp and is mentioned in the Bible.  Psalm 150 tells us to use all kinds of instruments to praise God and includes the lyre.  The lute was popular in Tudor times.

Makers and repairers of stringed instruments are often referred to as luthiers.

  1. Love it! I’ve always wondered about the difference between the two. I know the lyre from Greek myths, but–from the pictures I’ve seen–it looks remarkably like a lute. I need to do more research 🙂

    Thanks for a great post!
