This post is written in response to the daily prompt The stat connection.
My top three posts on this blog are
Cathedral Window Patchwork Pincushion 70 views
Three men 51 views
A silver lining for my blog 27 views
These are three very different posts. The first one Is about a craft project. I think it is successful, because I only used four tags including origami. It has continued to attract views, although there are few likes or comments. I have also linked to it from a related post on my main blog Sue’s considered trifles
The second one is very different. It was my response to a daily prompt, which I wrote soon after the prompt was published. It used the same idea for a punch-line as another response, which I happened to read before pressing publish and linked to. Having links in two places early on probably added to the number of views, but using the tags humor and humour often helps.
A silver lining for my blog was written in response to a PromptforthePromptless from Rarasaur. The category blogging is also popular. Again I only used a few tags. And I linked to it from a subsequent post.
Rarasaur has now moved these prompts to a new blog, but she is an established blogger with a good following and some of her followers have kindly shown an interest in my posts too.
So the connection between my most popular posts is effective choice of tags and categories and having links or pingbacks on other posts. It is not the content, not the standard of writing, but the visibility of the posts which drives up traffic. Other responses to the prompt are:-

OK, fellow blogger, I think I just learned something new. Are you saying that the fewer tags the better as opposed to the opposite? I have been tagging inappropriately if this is the case. Thanks for sharing and teaching the (sort of) newbie here.

I’m not sure if this is always the case. It was an obvious similarity when I compared my top 3 posts after home page/archives, which I interpret as the latest post and a few immediately preceding it. There is a wordpress resource which gives lots of hints and tips. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/ might be a good place to start. Thanks for reading and commenting. Sue
